Core Symbolism: Hope for a Bountiful Harvest

This is the core interpretation of the Knife-shaped pattern (刀字纹). The “Dao” (刀) is actually an abstract representation of a sickle, and variations in the lines convey different wishes for the harvest:

• “Knife”with wavy lines: Resembling a sickle that has been used or sharpened, it symbolizes a wish for a bountiful harvest in the current year.
• “Knife” with straight lines: Resembling a new sickle that has not yet been sharpened, it expresses a wish for favorable weather and an abundant harvest in the coming year.

The Dao-shaped pattern (刀字纹) is often not used on its own. It is commonly combined with other decorative motifs, creating a richer layer of symbolism.

• Camellia motif (茶花纹): Many bowls decorated with the Dao-shaped pattern also feature expressive, freehand-style camellia blossoms. The camellia is the city flower of Jingdezhen, and traditionally symbolizes humility, virtue, and resilience.
